Push a still top and it falls over instantly. Spin it fast, and it defies gravity, tracing lazy circles instead. Why does spinning change everything?

A top, a spinning coin, a planet's tilted axis, and a spacecraft's gyroscope all obey the exact same law: angular momentum doesn't just resist being stopped — it resists being tipped, in a very specific, non-obvious way.

Torque doesn’t tip it. It steers it.

A still top with no spin just tips over — gravity's torque pulls the top of its axis straight toward the ground. But once it's spinning, that same torque has nothing to pull toward the ground — the axis is already "occupied" by the spin. Instead, the torque nudges the axis sideways, a little at a time.

The trap
